wolves! i could talk about wolves forever - i was obsessed with them when i was 8-10 and i honestly still am. i fell out of love with them when i was a teenager (i was cringe and emo (but still partial to a emo wolf oc)) but my wolf phase is back and better than ever :D
aside from the fact that they're cute and fluffy, i'm really drawn to the social aspects of wolf packs which is why i love werewolves so much :) the idea of living in the woods with your pack and hunting for survival is kind of a dream, idk why but it sounds so fun. that and the whole stereotype of hierarchies - which yeah i mean it's bad and all but i just want strict social rules so i know exactly what i'm doing lol
wolf howls can be heard from up to 10 miles away, and can be used to locate other wolves and defend territory! they're like fingerprints - each wolf's howl is unique
wolf pups are cared for by all members of the pack, including their older siblings. when the pups are being weaned off of their mother's milk they feed on meat regurgitated by other members of the pack
they mate for life! they can find a new mate if their old one is killed, but they will stay with their existing mate for their whole life if given the chance
text 4
you know how everyone thinks a wolf pack has alphas and betas? that's not true - there is a heirarchy with a pair at the top, but it's the breeding pair, the parents of the other members of the pack. this pair are dominant over the other pack members, but only because they are the parents. there's no fighting to become the leader (although aggression within the pack still happens) as injuries would not be beneficial to the pack.

NEWBORNS
wolves breed once a year in February/March, where anywhere from 1 to 7 pups are born two months later in a den under tree roots or dug into a bank.
when the pups are born they are blind and deaf until their eyes open when they're 2 weeks old. At 3 weeks, their ears begin to open.
pup mortality rates are high - over half often don't reach adulthood due to predation or sickness or starvation.
wolf pups are fed roughly every 5 hours, and can feed on solid food (meat regurgitated by adult wolves).
at 8-10 weeks old they are moved from the den to a rendezvous site, somewhere above ground with more space for the pups to play and develop their strength.
JUVENILES
at 3 months old, wolf pups are old enough to explore alone and follow adults away from the den site. at 4 months they can go on hunts, but don't fully help until they are around 6 months old. at 9 months they can take down small prey like rabbits or hares. wolves reach full maturity at 3 years old.
juveniles can stay in their birth pack for their whole lives, but most don't. their reasons for leaving include starting their own packs, aggression from their parents or hunger - the 'alpha' pair may hoard food for themselves and the next litter of pups, forcing the juveniles to leave.
LILLY (alpha and omega)
yes, i know, this is the most wolf girl movie i could have picked. i loved it so much though, this girl was the ABSOLUTE COOLEST THING when i was like 8. she has hair over one eye, she's got purple eyes and a lily in her hair??!?! i was obsessed
GREELY (animal jam)
greely the wolf alpha. the man, the myth, the legend. any self respecting wolf girl was head over heels for this guy, and i was no exception. did i roleplay being his abandoned emo half wolf half phantom daughter in the pillow room? yeah ofc. i love him <3
CLAWDEEN WOLF (monster high)
i wasn't allowed monster high dolls as a kid, but when i went for a sleepover at my friends house i got to play with hers and i was obsessed with clawdeen. she has it all man, i love her. plus my friend let me borrow her monster high ds game, so it was a win/win lmao
BRIAN LITTREL (backstreet's back music video)
hear me out i know this is a weird one but this music video shaped me. i am who i am today because of this video. idk why man, but if i could be reincarnated into a music video it would be this one, and I would be the werewolf doing the cool dance
as a kid i was more obsessed with canines as a whole, not just wolves, so here are a few more foxes and dogs i think belong here too xx
FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009 film)
banger of a film, plus i love every single character in it. and mrs fox? iconic. wes anderson films reign supreme, i love owen wilson to death - isle of dogs is also an honorary mention on this list for every single dog
TODD AND COPPER (the fox and the hound)
i haven't seen this in forever but i was obsessed with it when i was little, bonus points for having both a fox and a dog
any wolf/dog/animal character from the early 2000's
i'm genuinely convinced early 2000's media was made to create more dog/wolfgirls. like there were so many cheap straight to dvd dog themed movies - marley and me, cats & dogs, marmaduke, beverly hills chihuahua, air bud??? i watched them all hundreds of times and never got bored. capitalism made me like wolves, is all i'm saying
